Maurice D. Kellogg was a fairly typical youth from the American heartland of Wellington, Kansas, where he was born.

Shoveling sand from railroad gondolas toughened his body but he had a curious mind that would enable him to recite poetry to prove a claim that he was only studying, after a diligent truant officer hauled him in before a befuddled principal.

This was an unusual person who was anything but dull. Leaving home and a job as a ticket agent for the Trailways busline, he set out for California by riding the rails as many did back then.  >>>
